On the evening of May 28th, the Faculty of Business Administration organized the talkshow “Self-Management: Adapting to Pressure, Expectations, and Workplace Realities” as part of the specialized seminar series for the Management course. The event provided students with practical insights to better prepare for their future careers in the corporate environment.

The guest speaker was Ms. Tran Nguyen Thanh Truc - Head of IUU Qualitative Research at Ipsos Vietnam. Representing the Faculty of Business Administration were Dr. Dang Thanh Thuy - Head of Human Resource Management Major and M.A. Nguyen Thi Lan Huong - Lecturer.

The talk show provided students with valuable lessons on transitioning from academic life to the professional workplace

Drawing on her extensive experience in market research and human resource management, Ms. Thanh Truc shared practical lessons and perspectives on the transition from an academic environment to a professional workplace.

At the beginning of the session, the speaker raised the question of the differences between “studying” and “working.” Through relatable examples, students gained a clearer understanding of the shift in mindset and responsibilities required when entering the corporate world. While students are typically evaluated through grades and examinations in an academic setting, workplace performance and the ability to create value become the primary measures of success in a professional environment.

One of the most engaging topics discussed was the gap between students’ expectations and the realities of the workplace. According to the speaker, many of the pressures young professionals experience when starting their careers stem from the “unspoken expectations” that exist between employees and organizations. To adapt more effectively, students need to embrace three important mindset shifts: from focusing on grades to focusing on work performance, from being passive to proactive, and from expecting correction to taking responsibility and pursuing continuous improvement.

In addition, the talk show provided students with a clearer understanding of the competencies that organizations value in young professionals. Beyond the professional knowledge required for recruitment, young employees need to develop adaptability, communication skills, the ability to collaborate effectively with supervisors and colleagues, and a lifelong learning mindset to achieve sustainable career growth within organizations.

A significant portion of the session was dedicated to discussing how to receive feedback effectively and seek support in the workplace. Students were encouraged to view feedback as an opportunity for self-improvement rather than as criticism or pressure. Through the analysis of real-world workplace scenarios, participants gained a better understanding of how to respond professionally, identify areas for improvement, and develop appropriate action plans.

Through practical, relatable, and industry-oriented discussions, the talk show provided students of the Faculty of Business Administration with valuable lessons on self-management, adapting to workplace pressures, and cultivating a professional mindset while still pursuing their university education.
